GOV. MALLOY: CONNECTICUT APPROVED FOR FEDERAL EMERGENCY HIGHWAY FUNDING FOR INITIAL STORM DAMAGE
 
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has approved the state’s request for an immediate $2 million in emergency funding for infrastructure repairs resulting from Storm Sandy.  The Governor received the news during a telephone call from USDOT Secretary Ray LaHood.
 
“We are grateful for the USDOT’s quick response to our request,” said Governor Malloy.  “This is money that we can put to use immediately to help rebuild in the wake of this devastating storm.”
 
The Connecticut Department of Transportation had submitted a formal request to the Federal Highway Administration earlier today, seeking $2 million in “quick release” emergency funding. The Connecticut DOT has identified three projects that need immediate attention and that could be covered by the initial $2 million:
 
  • The Route 162 bridge over the Oyster River in West Haven.  The bridge is open and safe, but guiderail and other material on the bridge approaches were severely damaged.
 
  • The seawall in Old Saybrook.  The area is not a danger to the motoring public, but does need a number of repairs.
 
  • The traffic signal at the intersection of Routes 302 and 58 in Bethel.  The signal was taken completely down by winds and falling trees.
